The Glass Onion Society

We were on our way up to the Entrance Market recently and dropped in on this café at Long Jetty, just outside The Entrance. I admit, I do fall onto the Good Food guide like a hungry person these days, to see what is recommended for the Central Coast, and here was a mention in the latest edition for The Glass Onion Society. So it was a bit of a no-brainer for a pre market brunch stop.

I completely fell for the place – love at first sight. Not a doily in sight. No overheated milk, there was art on the walls, skulls everywhere, and NO MEAT PIES (this is always a good sign).

Half the place is given over to vintage clothes and goods (I especially loved the painted vintage suitcases, top left in the shot below), the other half looks like a student arts gathering took hold and never left.

Comfy old sofas abound, there’s an art auction on one wall, and the vibe is very much Mexican day of the dead meets Inner West hipster. Fantastic!

The art auction: Dan vs Brent

You get an idea of what’s in store from the retro seating outside; on the inside there’s a student digs (I show my age!) feel to the random tables and chairs – tables being as varied as this fabulous games console, eventually being home to our coffees and toasted sarnies:

We ordered ham & cheese toasties – nothing particularly fancy, but good solid stuff. The savoury range is limited to toasties and quiches, but the sweet tarts, cakes and cheesecake looked awesome! Good coffee too with a note on the counter about the temperature needing to be 65° for the perfect drop.  Staff were ultra friendly and chatty.

If you haven’t had your fill of vintage by the time you’ve finished your coffee, there’s 2 or 3 retro shops nearby to pour over.

A little bit of Newtown on the Central Coast. And about time too.
